THE FULL 1986 SYDNEY BROADCAST ACROSS 2 x CDS Bob Dylan and Tom Petty were just three weeks into their 1986 True Confessions world tour when they brought in a professional camera crew to film a two-night stand at Sydney, Australia's Entertainment Centre. Dylan had made the mistake of chronicling a tour too early in the past (1978's Live at Budokan springs to mind), but this time around, they captured a pretty great night for an HBO concert special. Dylan first played with Petty and the Heartbreakers at the first Farm Aid in 1985.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (alternately Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) were an American rock band from Gainesville, Florida. Formed in 1976, the band originally comprised Tom Petty (lead singer, guitar), Mike Campbell (lead guitarist), Ron Blair (bass guitar), Stan Lynch (drums), and Benmont Tench (keyboards). In 1981, Blair, weary of the touring lifestyle, departed the band. His replacement, Howie Epstein, stayed with the band for the next two decades

Following a tepid reception to their self-titled debut, when Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers embarked on a promotional blitz following the release of their second album, 1978’s You’re Gonna Get It!, in many ways their career was on the line. The sessions for the album had been far from ideal – It was like this incredible apathy invaded the band, Petty said – but their live performances were tight and fierce. Listen to Her Heart, the lone single from the album, was regularly trotted out during promo gigs including on the BBC’s late-night rock show The Old Grey Whistle Test, for which Petty.
