Endless Wire is the eleventh and most recent studio album by the English rock band the Who; it was released on 30 October 2006 in the UK through Polydor Records and the following day in the US by Universal Republic. It was their first new album of original material in 24 years following the release of It's Hard in 1982. The album was originally to be released in early 2005 under the working title WHO2.

The Who retired following their 1982 farewell tour but like Frank Sinatra's frequent retreats from the stage, it was not a permanent goodbye. Seven years later, the band - Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle; that is, Keith Moon's replacement Kenny Jones wasn't invited back - embarked on a reunion tour, and ever since then the band was a going concern.

The Who are more prone to these allegations than most, having famously decried the horrors of being old from their very beginning. Now 20 years past the release of a record called Who's Last, and four years after the 2002 death of bassist John Entwistle, the band's continued existence seems feeble on paper. The first half of the record is everything one fears from a museum-piece band an entire generation past its prime: rehashes of old hits, preachy, creaky acoustic numbers, the noticeable absence of deceased contributors.

Recorded at Pete Townshend’s home studio and Eel Pie Oceanic between autumn 2002 and summer 2006, Endless Wire was the first album of new material to be released by The Who since It’s Hard in 1982. The album was produced by Pete Townshend with Roger Daltrey’s vocals produced by Bobby Pridden and Billy Nicholls. In the UK, it reached in the charts and in the US, #7.

Endless Wire debuted at on the Billboard 200, selling about 81,000 units in its first week of release22. In addition to the 19 tracks listed below, three songs were either considered for inclusion on the album or reportedly recorded for the album but were left off

While the first part of the album sends signals of setting something up, the second half only delivers halfway on that promise with just three of its ten songs being full versions to accommodate Townshend's mini opera pretensions even the most astute listener would be hard pressed to decipher. Two of its ten songs are included as bonus cuts in full length versions and it makes you wonder why not all could of been included the same. And what that something is appears to be a band that remembers being The Who, but for time passing and band members come and gone is not quite. This is Pete and Roger having one last go. The songs of Endless Wire are mature, sad, hopeful, melancholy even. And the album has the sound of two old rockers making one last stand.
