Every band has bad years, just the Grateful Dead had a lot more, that's because they outlasted all other band. Keep on Trucking boys. Came across this show first from a decent quality cassette tape of the KSAN broadcast in the late 1970s. The slow funky intro into St. Stephen is still hard wired into my brain and evokes the happy summer shows of this period. Just discovered the archive and am swimming in the excellent digital version of this classic.

The Grateful Dead is the debut album of the Grateful Dead. It was released by Warner Bros. Records in March 1967. According to the biographies of both bassist Phil Lesh and drummer Bill Kreutzmann, the band released the album as San Francisco's Grateful Dead. The album was primarily recorded at RCA's Studio A, in Los Angeles, in only four days. The band had wanted to record the tracks in their hometown of San Francisco, but no recording studios in the area had modernized equipment at the time
Anthem of the Sun is the second album by rock band the Grateful Dead. Released in 1968, it is the first album to feature second drummer Mickey Hart, who joined the band in September 1967. Currently ranked number 288 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. The mix of the album combines multiple studio and live recordings of each song.

Where to start with live Dead? Our team of experts breaks it down, combing through thousands of shows to find their greatest songs and most transcendent moments. As avatars of San Francisco's ’60s-born counterculture, the Grateful Dead have served as an alternative to American reality for more than a half-century. Performing from 1965 to 1995 with guitarist and songwriter Jerry Garcia, the Dead survive through a vast body of live recordings, originally traded by obsessive fans and now preserved on a long string of official releases. Though the band has an epic narrative (told in Amir Bar-Lev’s rapturous four-hour Long, Strange Trip documentary), much of the Dead’s story and significance remains purely musical.
