The Album 5 Demos are a collection of songs recorded between 2002's Maladroit and 2005's Make Believe. The first batch of demos, with some being recorded before Maladroit's release, reflect the band's earliest attempts at a fifth album. These sessions broke a lot of new ground, including Rivers inviting other members to contribute and sing songs, an increased use of keyboards and organs, and reflecting a songwriting style by Rivers which focuses more on storytelling and less on his own feelings.

The album was produced by The Cars lead singer Ric Ocasek, after Weezer was pressured by Geffen Records to avoid a self-produced album. On the choice, frontman Rivers Cuomo notes, I’d always admired The Cars and Ric Ocasek’s songwriting and production skills. Originally, Blue was to feature Jason Cropper on guitar, as on The Kitchen Tapes. However, after a falling out with the rest of the band and an expected baby on the way, Cropper.
