Listen free to Butthole Surfers – Electriclarryland (Birds, Cough Syrup and more). Electriclarryland is the seventh studio album by the American alternative rock band Butthole Surfers, released in April 1996 (see 1996 in music). This album brought the Butthole Surfers their first Top 40 hit with "Pepper". The title of this album is a parody of Jimi Hendrix's 3rd studio album entitled Electric Ladyland.

On Electriclarryland, their second major-label album, the Butthole Surfers continue the streamlined direction they began with Independent Worm Saloon, which basically means it's a loud guitar rock album. It's odd to think of the Buttholes maturing, but that is the case with this album. They have a couple of jangly pop numbers that appear to be played relatively straight and the heavier numbers have a piledriving inevitability that make them memorable. In short, Electriclarryland rocks and it rocks hard, with enough energy for bands half of the Buttholes' age.

This is the 'alternate cover' version for this album because many retailers refused to carry it. Most of the objection was due to the band's name so it too was modified on this release.

I got a copy for Christmas and discovered that the 2nd LP was warped beyond belief. It was completely unplayable. Since it was a gift, I contacted Runt/Plain about a replacement and they pretty much said, "Sorry, you'll have to return from wherever it was purchased. We haven't had any complaints about warps on this pressing." Because it was housed in a single sleeve, there's no way it could've been warped in transit. On top of that, while Plain had the lacquers cut by RTI - who do exceptionally good work - the pressing was carried out by Rainbo, a plant with some very bad quality control issues. This is what I believe led to the horrible warping on my copy. When it was first issued and defective, I contacted Plain and was told they were pressing at RTI and using high-resolution digital files provided by Capitol - certainly a step-up from their past practices of cutting from a commercially released CD as the source.Once I had my sister go through the inconvenience of exchanging it, the new copy is here and since it's actually flat and playable, I can say it sounds quite good. There's some surface noise, likely from the subpar QC at Rainbo, but I'm happy with it. However, I'm not happy with Runt/Plain's treatment of their customers.

Is there anyway to tell the 2 pressings apart when sealed? As much as I have had issues with this labels poor pressings. It's the last one I need to get. I don't want to buy it, and get back home to find out I ended up with yet another crapped out copy with the speed issues on side 1&2.

RUNT was supposed to recall all the defective versions, but it's possible some are still out there. I'd recommend buying it direct from their website to make sure.

Steel_Blade
i really wish i never bought this record. it's been nothing but nightmares in getting a pressing of it that don't look like it had acid dripped on it, or maybe paint thinner. but figures. i just picked up on that speed issue and wanted to use it for a frisbee. that's it. can't all the bands that get reissued on Plain get together and sue them for wrongfully representing the product, therefore making the band look bad?

Uaha
I sent Runt/Plain a Facebook message asking about the source and the speed issue. They said they had high-res audio files as the master and the speed issue was being corrected, but no ETA. Ugggghhhhhh.

Ffyan
I noticed the obvious change in speed on the A side and slightly on the B side on the last track. I am pretty Stoked I have this record but the speed issue kinda blows.

Kelerana
I contacted Plain. They said they know are are working on getting the records replaced.

Orll
The speed issue happens for a few seconds at the end of Side A. Sucks!
