Soprano Christine Brewer (born October 26, 1955) is an American opera singer. Brewer grew up in the Mississippi River town of Grand Tower, Illinois. She attended McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois and concentrated on music education. She was a music teacher for several years before embarking on a professional music performing career. She began her career in St. Louis, Missouri with the Saint Louis Symphony Chorus. She auditioned in 1981 for the chorus of Opera Theatre of Saint Louis (OTSL), in the start of her career in opera

American soprano Christine Brewer, who was educated at McKendree University in Illinois, began her career at the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, where she initially performed such roles from the light dramatic soprano repertoire as Mozart’s Donna Anna, Strauss’s Ariadne, and Britten’s Ellen Orford. Soon she was engaged by many renowned companies, including the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera, the Teatro Real Madrid, and San Francisco Opera.

Christine Brewer is one of the hottest young sopranos on the scene in the first decade of the twenty first century, and Wigmore Hall has done well in releasing her concert performance of September 8, 2007, on this disc, Songs by Wagner, Wolf, Britten and John Carter, where she is parternered by unashamed accompanist Roger Vignoles. The program begins with standard art song cycles by Hugo Wolf and Richard Wagner, and these Brewer easily dispatches with aplomb, though it is in the later part of the program when Brewer throws caution to the four winds that things really get going. While Brewer is able to scale the lofty heights of German art song with relative ease, inclusion of the John Carter work - not to mention her fine interpretation of it - demonstrates that Christine Brewer isn't about to lose sight of her roots in the American Midwest, and that it helps inform her view of the outside world.
