The Irving Berlin Songbook. Astaire agreed, and Granz assembled a backup sextet drawn from the ranks of the jazz musicians he frequently used for his Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts: trumpeter Charlie Shavers, tenor saxophonist Flip Phillips, guitarist Barney Kessel, pianist Oscar Peterson, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Alvin Stoller. Recording sessions held in December 1952 produced more than three dozen sides released by Granz's Clef Records the following year on the four-disc box set The Astaire Story.

The Astaire Story is a 1952 album by Fred Astaire. The album was conceived of and produced by Norman Granz, the founder of Clef Records (and later Verve Records), who was also responsible for the Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts, at which all of the musicians on the album had performed. The album's song selection provides an overview of Astaire's singing career although Astaire also demonstrates his tap dancing on three tracks and there is one informal instrumental Jam session
Fred Astaire Irving Berlin Format: Audio Cassette. This album is just great. Fred is so relaxed and cant help but swing. The backing by all jazz greats involved is super. One person found this helpful. Masters of their craft, these men literally gave us the Great American Songbook. Many of the songs here were written by Berlin expressly for Astaire, songs that first appeared in films such as Holiday Inn, Carefree, Follow the Fleet, Blue Skies, Top Hat, and of course, Easter Parade. And it's not hard to imagine why. Fred is, of course, known primarily as a dancer, but as a true song-and-dance man, he could do both very, very well. It's unfortunate that not enough is said of his singing - that tender, persuasive voice that takes a song and sings it directly to your heart.
