Themes for Television ’s highlights effectively double as a showcase for Jewel’s impressive sense of arrangement and mood-setting. Windswept (Minimal) is anchored around placid keys and close-mic’d woodwinds, every figurative breath echoing throughout the track’s mix to create a truly chilling feeling, while Embers breaks into a skyward major-key ascent before settling beautifully on a minor chord, like a feather hitting hard ground. It’s possible that Themes for Television ’s strengths originate from Jewel’s own intimate personal connection to the Twin Peaks franchise. Last year he told Consequence of Sound that he stopped following the original series during its early-1990s run after a friend he watched it with committed suicide; he didn’t return to it until moving to Montreal and meeting a band member from Italians Do It Better outfit Desire years later.
Released to mark the one-year anniversary since the return of Twin Peaks, Themes For Television is made up of outtakes from the sessions for Jewel's last solo album, Windswept. Selections from Windswept were chosen by director David Lynch for Twin Peaks: The Return. None of the music was made specifically for the TV series, though Jewel wrote some of it with what he imagined Twin Peaks: The Return might be like in mind.

The 21-track LP features material from sessions for Jewels’s excellent 2017 LP Windswept and is described by Jewel in the press release as an epic from the cutting room floor. Jewel sent Twin Peaks director David Lynch around six hours of music intended for the show, but although ‘Windswept’ was featured in episode 5, the majority of the material wasn’t used. However, Jewel’s band Chromatics did end up performing their 2015 track ‘Shadow’ on Twin Peaks’ season three premiere.
But before we get to that, Chromatics mastermind Johnny Jewel has something new for us: An hour-long mostly-instrumental album called Themes For Television, which he just dropped on us out of nowhere, with no warning. There’s nothing much disco about Themes For Television
On his new album, Johnny Jewel explained, "The project began as a sonic exploration of the sounds I was hearing in my nightmares, I wanted to find my way out of the maze by focusing on beauty over fear - like the way the fractured sunrise looks in a dream. Alongside the stream for his new album, Jewel also dropped the monochrome video for the lead single "Red Door". Themes For Television is out now on digital platforms.
