Ludwig van Beethoven wrote his 32 piano sonatas between 1795 and 1822. Although originally not intended to be a meaningful whole, as a set they compose one of the most important collections of works in the history of music. Hans von Bülow called them "The New Testament" of the piano literature (Johann Sebastian Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier being "The Old Testament").

In the last of five DVD releases seven-time GRAMMY® Award-winning pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim plays the Piano Sonatas 28-32 of Ludwig van Beethoven’s thirty-two piano sonatas, the so-called ‘New Testament’ of music. Composed over twenty-five years and embodying the shift of musical taste from the Classic to the Romantic, their performance requires a musician of extraordinary versatility. Barenboim is one such pianist – his recordings run the gamut from Bach and Mozart to Bruckner and Bartók.

The thirty-two Beethoven piano sonatas are some of the best-known works in the classical music repertoire: there is not a single compilation album of classical music which does not feature the first movement of the Moonlight Sonata, and the Adagio cantabile from the Pathétique has been used for many commercials. In the 20th century, many of the most famous pianists have recorded their own rendition of the works, notably Claudio Arrau, Maurizio Pollini, Wilhelm Backhaus, Paul Badura-Skoda, Alfred Brendel, Aldo Ciccolini, Wilhelm Kempff and Daniel Barenboim. A gigantic project, in 9 or 10 CDs each time. The films displayed here show this same desire of Daniel Barenboim to embrace those 32 piano masterpieces.

Barenboim's first complete recording of the Beethoven sonatas is not perfect, but there is not a single weak performance in the whole cycle and many which are outstanding. In it are gems which rank in my estimation as the best performances on record, including the Tempest, Pastorale and Walstein sonatas and his unique reading of the Pathétique sonata. Individual standout movements abound, such as the last movements of the Moonlight and Appassionata. The perpetuum mobilé last movement of the little known Opus 54 is transformed from an exercise as most others play it, into a subtly romantic delight. In these performances, there is a tendency in some of the earlier sonatas to rush some movements at the expense of the drama inherent in the work. I noticed this for instance in the Scherzo of the Opus 2 No 3 and in the first movement of the Opus 14 No 2. These are minor transgressions in the midst of predominantly superb performances.Others have classed this as a "desert island" pick. I would tend to agree. 4½ stars.
