Duct tape, also called duck tape, is cloth- or scrim-backed pressure-sensitive tape, often coated with polyethylene. There are a variety of constructions using different backings and adhesives, and the term 'duct tape' is often used to refer to all sorts of different cloth tapes of differing purposes. Duct tape is often confused with gaffer tape (which is designed to be non-reflective and cleanly removed, unlike duct tape)

Duck tape, like so many other things, has its origins in the Second World War. An American woman named Vesta Stoudt, whose sons were fighting in the war, was working in a munitions plant in 1942 when she noticed a limitation in the ammo packaging. Vesta Stoudt: The lady who helped invent ‘duck’ tape. She wrote a letter to then President Roosevelt, who seemed to agree with her.
