Channelling small-town disaffection into hollered ladrock, the Enemy's chart-topping debut was one of the less inspiring success stories of 2007. By comparison, the Coventry trio's follow-up sounds positively adventurous. Elsewhere, we get swooning, string-swept laments and what appears to be their take on Pulp's "Common People"

Music for the People. Release group by The Enemy. All that work won't necessarily be undone by the release of their terrible second album, but it certainly represents a knockback

Music For The People is a major letdown. The patronizingly pompous title reflects the album’s overblown and stodgy musical contents. Whereas the first album featured a whole raft of memorably spiky songs about urban dystopia, full of aggressive energy and punky passion, this one may still have some strong melodies and lucid lyrics but the sharp focus has been dissipated into a big booming sound inside which the songs rattle hollowly. The anti-American sentiments expressed in 51st State (already a New Model Army song title) are well phrased but hardly original – where the people have no voice/We’ve been looking for a leader/But we never had a choice – while musically it reminds one of The Clash in their Sandinista phase, with Clarke doing a Strummer-like snarl.

A lot of people have gone back to our first-listen blog post and expressed their disappointment.

The discography of Public Enemy, an American hip hop group, consists of fourteen studio albums, two live albums, four compilation albums, two remix albums, one soundtrack album, four video albums, thirty-nine singles, four promotional singles and thirty-nine music videos. The group released their debut studio album, Yo! Bum Rush the Show, in February 1987; it peaked at number 125 on the United States Billboard 200. The album spawned the singles "Public Enemy No. 1" and "You're Gonna Get Yours".

The Enemy play this year's Radio 1 Big Weekend in Swindon. When speaking to Newsbeat upstairs in a Brixton pub last November, The Enemy's Tom Clarke attempted to sum up his band's new expanded direction. Imagine cloning a woolly mammoth and an elephant," he began, "then gluing the two together. It might have sounded ludicrous but, now the world has heard the first single No Time For Tears, it is also a hint at their lofty ambitions. I don't see that," says Clarke firmly. I don't like that term 'band of the people' - I think the fact of the matter is, we're a band and we are people.
