Martin Luther King Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. Born in Atlanta, King is best known for advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience, tactics his Christian beliefs and the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi helped inspire.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day (officially Birthday of Martin Luther King, J. and sometimes referred to as MLK Day) is an American federal holiday marking the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is around King's birthday, January 15. The holiday is similar to holidays set under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. The earliest Monday for this holiday is January 15 and the latest is January 21.

Martin Luther studied to be a lawyer before deciding to become a monk. Did You Know? Luther refused to recant his '95 Theses' and was excommunicated from the Catholic Church. Did You Know? Luther married a former nun and they went on to have six children. Theologian Martin Luther forever changed Christianity when he began the Protestant Reformation in 16th-century Europe. Who Was Martin Luther? Martin Luther was a German monk who began the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century, becoming one of the most influential and controversial figures in the history of Christianity. Luther called into question some of the basic tenets of Roman Catholicism, and his followers soon split from the Roman Catholic Church to begin the Protestant tradition. His actions set in motion tremendous reform within the Church.

While mixing a vinyl recording of Martin Luther King J. s famous "I Have a Dream" speech with a music beat, he started to mimic King’s voice. A friend of mine heard me and came into the room asking if that was me, Ferguson told ABC News. I told him that it was and he said, ‘You should really learn King’s work. Imagine the people that you can bless by being able to reinvigorate Dr. King’s dream. Since then, Ferguson has made it his life’s work to impersonate the civil rights leader and study King’s words. Using one’s voice came naturally to Ferguson.

DW's Klaus Krämer explains how Martin Luther's publication of 95 Theses against so-called "indulgences" in the Catholic Church started a religious revolution. He finds the practice fundamentally wrong in terms of theology. His Bible study has left him with the unshakeable realization that a sinful person who believes in an all-powerful and absolute God is made righteous in the eye's of God through this very same belief and God's mercy - and not through money and good works. Luther is convinced that this is the core of the Christian message.

Luther led the movement mostly by his writings. Meanwhile, he did what he thought was his main job in life, teaching the Bible at the University of Wittenberg. He vowed to protect this troublemaker. Things came to a head in 1520. By then, Luther had taken to calling the Church a brothel, and Pope Leo X the Antichrist. Leo gave Luther sixty days to appear in Rome and answer charges of heresy.

Martin Luther was an academic and religious figure who was strongly against the corruption of the Catholic Church in the 16th century. Around this time, the church was heavily involved in the politics of the Holy Roman Empire and the practice of selling 'indulgences' was becoming increasingly common.
