Kojak's first album was chocked full of soul-house, and their second, EVERY ROOM ON EVERY FLOOR, is the same. If anything, it might be funkier. The spoken word of "Art to Breathe" gives way to the smooth groove of "Corner Soul," a cracklingly solid track. "You Can't Live Without Me" and "Tell Me" are more poppy (with helpful vocals from Ruth-Ann from Olive) but they're joyous rather than throwaway. The darkness that suffused the first album makes a welcome appearance on "Doin' Nothing," detective noir house at its best. "God Bless Myself" continues the mood, even as it slows things down to a low hip-hop beat. But for me, the best track is the moody "Brother," which milks pure funk from Jayhem's plaintive vocals.
