Steve Lacy (July 23, 1934 – June 4, 2004), born Steven Norman Lackritz in New York City, was a jazz saxophonist and composer recognized as one of the important players of soprano saxophone. Coming to prominence in the 1950s as a progressive Dixieland musician, Lacy went on to a long and prolific career. He worked extensively in experimental jazz and to a lesser extent in free improvisation, but Lacy's music was typically melodic and tightly-structured. The Door is the second album by Steve Lacy to be released on the RCA Novus label.

The Door" (a whimsical piece built off of the knock of a door) and Thelonious Monk's "Ugly Beauty" (played as a waltz) are performed by the s quintet (consisting of altoist Steve Potts, pianist Bobby Few, bassist Jean-Jacques Avinel and drummer Oliver Johnson). Cliches" is an overlong duet by Lacy and Avinel with the bassist switching to thumb piano.

Lacy began his career as a guitarist and producer for the Los Angeles- based R&B/soul band, The Internet, and as a solo artist in the mid-to-late 2010s. His debut project, a song-series titled Steve Lacy's Demo, was released in February 2017 and his debut album, Apollo XXI, was released on May 24, 2019. He is currently signed to 3qtr (Three Quarter) and Columbia.
