At the end of World War II, Boots Randolph played saxophone, trombone, and vibraphone in the United States Army Band. After his service in the Army, he played with Dink Welch's Kopy Kats in Decatur, Illinois, from 1948 to 1954. He briefly resided in Louisville, Kentucky, before returning to Decatur to start his own group During his forty-plus year career, Randolph performed in hundreds of venues alongside many artists in pop, rock, jazz, and country music . Boots Randolph was a saxophone player who made numerous albums that made the Billboard charts in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Recording almost exclusively for the Monument label, these albums contained instrumental versions of the day's current hits. The Word Of Boots Randolph originally hit the charts in 1971. It was a two record set, now issued for the first time on CD on a single disc.

This album was recorded monoaurally and stereophonically in Nashville. Various pickup mikes used included: Tenor Sax: Telefunken U-47 or Neumann U-67; Organ: directly into console of recording mixer; Rhythm Guitar: Neuman U-48; Electric Guitar: Neumann U-48; Bass Guitar: Telefunken KM54; Bass Fiddle: RCA 44BX; and Piano: Altec 150-A. Mastering was done at 15 . from stereophonic tape on a Scully lathe, employing a Westrex head. Nearly identical to this release Boots Randolph's Yakety Sax! which has a different label artwork on the vinyl.
