Album · 2013 · 219 Songs. I'll Chase the Blues Away. Ella Fitzgerald & Chick Webb and His Orchestra.

Ella Jane Fitzgerald (April 25, 1917 – June 15, 1996) was an American jazz singer sometimes referred to as the First Lady of Song, Queen of Jazz, and Lady Ella. She was noted for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing, intonation, and a "horn-like" improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing.

Ella Jane Fitzgerald was born in Newport News, Va. on April 25, 1917. Her father, William, and mother, Temperance (Tempie), parted ways shortly after her birth. Together, Tempie and Ella went to Yonkers, ., where they eventually moved in with Tempie's longtime boyfriend Joseph Da Silva. The album sold 1 million copies, hit number one, and stayed on the pop charts for 17 weeks. Suddenly, Ella Fitzgerald was famous.

She began singing with the Chick Webb Orchestra and had several hits with them, including 'Love and Kisses' and novelty song 'A-Tisket, A-Tasket'; when Webb died in 1939 Ella became the orchestra's band leader.

Here's some early Fitzgerald sides, all featuring her as a vocalist with the Chick Webb band and recorded between 1935 and 1938 for the Brunswick and Decca labels. Transfers of the old 78 discs are decent, although a bit fusty in spots. Highlights include "A-Tisket, A-Tasket," "Squeeze Me," "Harlem Congo," and "Pack up Your Sins and Go to the Devil.
