I have heard this album praised and lifted high as a beacon of 70s soul, but having listened well and truly, I don't get it. Yes, Thelma's voice is wonderful. And there are some great moments, as when she lets loose on a growling cover of "Jumpin' Jack Flash". But the rest is treacly, syrupy pop of the sort Jimmy Webb is best known for when left to his own devices (his songs are always better when someone else produces them). The end result is a record full of promises that never get fulfilled. It's a good foreshadowing of what Houston would do at Motown later in the decade, but as a Soul workout? Hardly. More like an MOR pop marathon.
