Bedřich Smetana (Czech pronunciation: (listen); 2 March 1824 – 12 May 1884) was a Czech composer who pioneered the development of a musical style that became closely identified with his country's aspirations to independent statehood. He has been regarded in his homeland as the father of Czech music.

Bedřich Smetana (2 March 1824 - 12 May 1884) was a Czech composer, one of his nation's most significant. He is best known for his symphonic poem Vltava - Die Moldau, the second in a cycle of six which he entitled Má vlast ("My Homeland"), and for his opera Prodaná nevěsta ("The Bartered Bride"). Smetana was the son of a brewer in Litomyšl in Bohemia.

Bedrich Smetana : Ma Vlast (Ma Patrie), six poèmes symphoniques, Orchestre Philharmonique Tchèque, dir. Karel Ancerl. Ančerl's rhythmically sharp style stands in the recognizable Czech tradition. I have heard two other recordings of "Ma vlast. Rafael Kubelik is no doubt the work's best-known conductor, so I sought out one of his recordings - the Boston Symphony Orchestra, recorded in 1971. I found it to be utterly disappointing, lacking in every respect compared to a surprising alternative released by RCA in 2003 - Nikolaus Harnoncourt's live recording with the Wiener Philharmoniker of 2001. Harnoncourt and Vienna take a broader reading, sharp and clear with beautiful sound
