Under Herbert von Karajan the Berliner Philharmoniker developed their very own performance culture, characterised by a beauty of sound, enchanting legati, virtuosity and perfection. He preferred to concentrate on the classical-romantic repertoire: Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Wagner and Strauss. The Herbert von Karajan Conducting Competition, first held in 1969, was springboard to an international career for young conductors like Mariss Jansons and Valery Gergiev. Karajan promoted promising talents even beyond that, including Claudio Abbado, Seiji Ozawa and the violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. Concerned about the next generation of musicians, he initiated the Orchestra Academy in 1972: it prepares prospective orchestra musicians to work in a professional orchestra. Herbert von Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker were considered a dream team.

by Berliner Philharmoniker & Herbert von Karajan & Chor der Deutschen Oper Berlin. How does Karajan's rendering of the other two fare against the competition? In spite of Herbert and Igor perhaps not seeming a match made in heaven (a musical Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact), it should come as no surprise that the maestro lends a certain grandeur to both 'In C' and 'Of Psalms', something Simon Rattle on E M I so studiously avoids. It all depends on what you think these symphonies actually are.

Notes
This is NOT a re-release of the 1964 performance by the same artists and label. Manifest details attest to this fact. This particular release was clearly marketed in Canada with Labels clearly marked as Printed in CanadaAs a ballet the Tableaux comprise many discrete subsections (now itemized as requested) which proceed without an non-scored break or pause of any kind. Silences and abrupt changes of mood mark different "movements" but all are recorded as one continuous track.
This composition continues to be considered as one of the uber-masterpieces of the 20th-century. I would argue that it is THE greatest. It remains fresh through a hundred hearings, and different performances offer a feast of possibilities.
If you name the greatest piece by the greatest composer of your preference, this work is a peer.
