Sammy Davis Jr. December 8, 1925 – May 16, 1990. Being a star made it possible for me to get insulted in places where the average Negro could never hope to go and get insulted. Realizing that Sammy wasn’t going to be around much longer, a television special was planned. 26 entertainers had a two-and-a-half-hour tribute to Sammy, which he attended. At the end of it (it aired Feb 4), Sammy got up, did not speak, and did a little soft-shoe to a standing ovation. He entered Cedars Sinai Medical Center because the cancer had returned. On the 13th of March, Sammy went home to die. One report stated that Davis had dwindled to a mere 60 pounds and was in the fetal position

Show ended up being hosted by people other than Sammy Davis Jr. for the next three weeks. Granted, the guest hosts were pretty darned great - first came Johnny Carson, then Sean Connery (!), and finally Jerry Lewis - and when Davis returned to the show that bore his name, critics reversed their opinion because NBC had backed off from micromanaging the show in favor of letting Davis be himself. As for the album, its dozen songs are taken from five different sessions done by Davis between 1961 and 1966, but the material is incredibly strong, including compositions by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley ( Feeling Good, This Dream, What Kind of Fool Am I ), Charles Aznavour ( Paris is at Her Best in May, Love at Last You Have Found Me ), and Sammy Cahn. and Jimmy Van Heusen ( More Than One Way ).
