It’s an understatement to say that ‘Every Breath You Take’’s reputation precedes it. The Police’s original recording became the biggest US and UK hit of 1983, with the track topping the US Billboard chart for eight weeks and heading up the UK Top 40 for a month. This deceptively pretty song concerning obsessive love has since yielded a plethora of industry awards and it even famously provided the bedrock for Puff Daddy’s multi-platinum 1997 smash ‘I’ll Be Missing You’. I had written it in half an hour

Every Breath You Take" was the first single from the album. Police guitarist Andy Summers made a significant contribution to the arrangement of this song. He explained in a Record Collector interview: "Without that guitar part there's no song. More songs with videos directed by Godley & Creme. More songs covered by the Glee cast. More songs from 1983. Lyrics to Every Breath You Take. The Police Artistfacts. Susan from Atlanta, Georgia"Every Breath You Take" is also the title of a book by Ann Rule about Allan Blackthorne and Sheila Bellush, Allan's ex-wife whom he stalked and had murdered. The title of the book was taken from the song. This book's title and Sting's interview validated my theory about its being a song about stalking.

"I don't ever wanna play the part of a statistic on a government chart." Another chronologically-correct retrospective, this great collection showcases just how talented a band The Police really were. The Derek Burbidge-directed promo videos indicate that we're dealing with three real musicians here, and much less video artists, evident by the careless, reckless and home-video style cinematography of their early outputs when compared to today's pretentious poses and overly complex and choreographed productions where the actual music only plays a supporting role. We get to see the trio half-heartedly lip-syncing or merely horsing around and that they're having great fun miming to the songs; with probably everyone simply hopping into the back of some station wagon to quickly go shooting a video or three at someone's house in an afternoon, with the brilliant Stewart Copeland air-drumming on a chair in the dressing room and, his crowning glory, even the back of a NASA rocket in "Walking On The Moon". Sting also gets in on the act by ignoring his bass miming and concentrating on rock star posturing - but despite the banter, it can be seen that they took their craftmanship and their early "white reggae" seriously. However, by the time Lexi Godfrey and Lol Creme were commissioned to direct their videos, it was visible that the band was at a breaking point and they were hardly speaking to each other... Stewart Copeland's withdrawal is evident in "Synchronicity II" as Sting clearly moves to the fore and gets delusions of being a great solo artist and film actor. Andy Summers, meanwhile, appears to not give a damn and just does what he does best: play guitar and probably remain the invisible cornerstone of the band. The apalling "Don't Stand So Close To Me '86" signalled the end of one of the best bands ever. But then again, it was the music that sold me this tape, not the videos.
