Hope shows a new Francis altogether, employing bouncy cadences, explosive deliveries and complex rhyme schemes. The vast majority of the album references older hip-hop, including that of OC, Black Sheep, Beastie Boys, Audio Two, De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest, among others.

On Hope, Sage Francis pays homage to the hip-hop that he and Joe Beats grew up on and that got them involved with the genre, it’s a tribute to the golden age of hip-hop and an indictment on the state of it circa 2003. On ‘Mainstream 307’, he shows what may have been his motivation for this album: I don’t wanna be famous like the artists on your playlist, the more emotion I put into it the harder they diss then goes on to say While I’m busting dope lines I misquoted and you might think I wrote it. Amazing album by the one and only, Sage Francis, a master of rhyme and all around spectacular talent, and Joey Beats' beats are catchy and edgy. Hope is a very well rounded album. Lyrically, a bit of a departure from Personal Journals, but that is certainly the intention, as Sage has a different identity when partnered with Joe Beats. Sage tackles a maelstrom of personal and industry beefs, over hard hitting tracks occasionally assisted by Sixtoo. Hope is chock-full of metaphors, and may not necessarily make sense upon the first couple of times that you listen to the album, but this really does not detract from it overall.
