New Orleans Suite is the eighth studio album by American pianist, composer, and bandleader Duke Ellington recorded and released on the Atlantic label in 1970. The album features the final recordings of longtime Ellington saxophonist Johnny Hodges, who died between the album's two recording sessions. The album won a Grammy Award in 1971 for Best Jazz Performance by a Big Band. The suite was commissioned by George Wein for the 1970 New Orleans Jazz Festival.

This late-period Duke Ellington album is perhaps most notable for including altoist Johnny Hodges' final recordings. In fact, Hodges was supposed to record his first soprano solo in nearly 30 years on "Portrait of Sidney Bechet," but he passed away before the second session. The set consists of the five-song "New Orleans Suite" plus tributes to Wellman Braud, Bechet (tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves took Hodges' place as its soloist), Louis Armstrong (a feature for trumpeter Cootie Williams), and Mahalia Jackson.

Recorded on April 27, 1970 (tracks A1, A2, A4, B1 and B3), and on May 13, 1970 (A3, A5, B2 and B4) at the National Recording Studios, New York City.

Exclusively for Prime members. Sample this album Artist (Sample). 1. 30. Blues For New Orleans. This later album on Atlantic doesn't sound nearly as good as his Columbia and RCA and even Reprise recordings - those are some of the best-sounding mono and stereo albums ever made. This one's okay, sound-wise, but the music is much more than okay and for Ellington fans a must-have.
