Shaft is a double album by Isaac Hayes, recorded for Stax Records' Enterprise label as the soundtrack LP for s 1971 blaxploitation film Shaft. The album mostly consists of instrumentals composed by Hayes as score for the film. Three vocal selections are included: "Soulsville", "Do Your Thing", and "Theme from Shaft". A commercial and critical success, Shaft is Hayes' best-known work and the best-selling LP ever released on a Stax label.

This album is noted for Hayes's image (shaved head, gold jewelry, sunglasses, et. and his distinct sound (extended orchestral songs relying heavily on organs, horns and guitars, deep bass vocals, et. Also on the album, Hayes reinterpreted "Walk On By" (which had been made famous by Dionne Warwick) into a 12-minute exploration. His new album, 1975's Chocolate Chip, saw Hayes embrace the disco sound with the title track and lead single. I Can't Turn Around" would prove a popular song as time went on. "i can't turn around" was re birthed during the house music era in chicago in the 80's by house music duo jm silk. This would be Hayes's last album to chart in the top 40 for many years. Later in the year, the all-instrumental Disco Connection album fully embraced disco. Groove-A-Thon (1976). Juicy Fruit (Disco Freak) (1976).

The uptempo happy-in-love ditty "We've Got a Whole Lot of Love" showcases HBS' sterling voices. Ike shows a different side on the soft, longing "Wish You Were Here," whose horn arrangements and backing vocals are simultaneously enticing and titillating.
