West Coast jazz refers to styles of jazz that developed in Los Angeles and San Francisco during the 1950s. West Coast jazz is often seen as a subgenre of cool jazz, which consisted of a calmer style than bebop or hard bop. The music relied relatively more on composition and arrangement than on the individually improvised playing of other jazz styles. Although this style dominated, it wasn't the only form of jazz heard on the American West Coast.

Some of the additional players on this set round out the entire package and make it a truly representative sampling of the best of the West Coast in the 1950s. The remastered sound is terrific since most of these sides were taken from actual master tapes, and the price point is extremely attractive. While not a standard academic introduction to the West Coast or "cool" sound of jazz, it is more than merely satisfying.

One of the most lyrical West Coast albums ever, this project features the underrated and talented Ras Kass spitting poetics over dope production. He’s one of the most talented wordsmiths in the West and this album was a true testament to his skill and precision. On tracks like Anything Goes and the super Nature of The Threat, Ras goes ballistic with his lyricism, helping to paint pictures of what he sees around him and expressing his knowledge. This album is one to study if you’re a fan of Hip Hop. Dr. Dre- The Chronic (1992). It is probably hard to understand and I might look crazy, but this is my list. This album was the first Hip Hop double album and one of the best of 1996, as Pac effortlessly coasted through tracks like Skandalouz, I Ain’t Mad At Cha, Holla At Me, and more. This is a definite West Coast classic. Snoop Doggy Dogg - Doggystyle (1993).

Hints of West coast jazz had been played by Lester Young and even Charlie Parker and others before the style and name became known. The hallmarks of the sound are calmness, restrained timbre, more sophisticated harmonies and limited vibrato. Along with Brubeck; Gerry Mulligan, Shelly Manne, Shorty Rogers, Stan Getz, Art Pepper, Chet Baker, Bud Shank, Jimmy Giuffre, Russ Freeman, and others played West coast jazz. Contemporary, Pacific Jazz and Fantasy were the best known West coast record labels. Sonny Rollins went West and made a trio album with Shelly Manne and Rollins’s bassist, Ray Brown. The album, Way out West, is also noted for having one of jazzes most unusual cover photographs.

West Coast Jazz (Stan Getz album). West Coast Jazz is a 1955 album by Stan Getz accompanied by a quartet including trumpeter Conte Candoli. Getz recorded the album in California, where he was filming parts for The Benny Goodman Story, and appearing for a week at the nightclub Zardi's Jazzland. The musicians that accompanied him at Zardi's were chosen by Getz to make this album with him.
