The American singer Emmylou Harris has released 26 studio albums (including four albums of collaborations with other artists), three live albums, 11 compilation albums, three video albums, and 70 singles. After releasing a debut folk album on the Jubilee label in 1969 and recording with Gram Parsons, Harris signed with Reprise Records in 1974. In 1975, Harris released her major-label debut album, Pieces of the Sky, on Reprise
The Christmas album Light of the Stable was released in 1979; its title track featured backing vocals by Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Neil Young, all of whom Harris had worked with sporadically since the mid-1970s, and with whom she continued to collaborate through the 2000s. In the 1980s, Harris explored country music's history further with the bluegrass-oriented recording of Roses in the Snow, featuring Ricky Skaggs, Tony Rice, Albert Lee, Emory Gordy Jr. and Jerry Douglas. Harris also accompanied alternative country singer Ryan Adams on his solo debut, Heartbreaker and sang on Tracy Chapman's fifth album, Telling Stories. Also in 2000, Harris joined an all-star group of traditional country, folk and blues artists for the T-Bone Burnett–produced soundtrack to the Coen Brothers film, O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Emmylou Harris' "The Christmas Album" is a must-have for all Harris fans and those who enjoy delightful holiday songs. This compilation includes "Light of the Stable", a beautiful hymn praising the birth of the Savior, by the light of a stable so many years ago. While appearing on Opryland's Country Christmas tv special, Emmylou describes this selection as one of the "classics" regarding Chrismas songs, comparing it to "Little Drummer Boy" and "Silent Night", also found on this collection.
Emmylou Harris is an artist with the rare sort of voice that communicates an honest and firmly grounded humanity while possessing a crystalline purity that verges on the angelic. In short, she was a singer born to make a great Christmas album, and in 1979 she did just that with Light of the Stable, in which she fused the high-lonesome traditional sound she'd been exploring on Roses in the Snow and Blue Kentucky Girl with songs that honored the spiritual and emotional roots of the holiday season
Album · 1979 · 13 Songs. Light Of The Stable was recorded in 1979, but her heartfelt hayseed hymns somehow sound simultaneously timeless and relevant. An upbeat take on Tex Logan's "Christmas Time's A-Coming" opens with James Burton's guitar, some melodic banjo and Ricky Skaggs' mandolin all blending to support some of the most beautiful high-lonesome harmonies ever put to tape.
